Things you should think about before you hire a landscape designer
Find and collect photographs from books or magazines that reflect styles of landscaping that you really love. Do you find formal Italian gardens just breathtaking? Although a full Italian garden might be a little over the top for the style of your home, elements of that style can be incorporated easily into your garden, creating a fitting landscape that still takes your breath away.
What times of the year are the most important to you? Four season emphasis is important for every garden, but if you spend your winters in Florida, a big summer splash is probably what you would most appreciate.
What is your budget ballpark? Your landscape designer will work within your budget to create a garden that can be installed in phases or one that will be put in all at once. Gardens come in a myriad of shapes and sizes, and your designer will help you allocate your budget so you get the most bang for your buck.
How often and for how many guests do you entertain? If you throw the neighborhood’s best 4th of July party, a large scale patio with numerous spaces and a great outdoor kitchen is for you. If you spend more time outside relaxing with your immediate family, a cozy patio with a fire pit might be more your style.
The landscaping company you decide to work with should be able to not only give you client references but should be able to show you around some previously installed sites. This gives you not only a good idea of the craftsmanship of their work but also lets you see the designer’s aesthetic sense.
Is your landscape company licensed and insured? What does their warranty cover and in what time frames? Do they have proof of worker’s compensation? Are they easy to reach and do they call you back in a timely manner? These questions will help put your mind at ease during the entire process.
Your landscape is a huge investment that not only will increase your home’s resale value but provides a one-of-a-kind space for your family to spend time together outdoors. Ask as many questions and share all of your ideas with your landscape designer to create the best space possible.
